In the “crunchy” community, we like to joke that coconut oil is the answer to everything. You name it, coconut oil will fix it, sooth it, heal it. But you know what? Apple cider vinegar just might have coconut oil beat.
There are literally books entirely devoted to explaining the dozens (perhaps hundreds?) of uses and health benefits of apple cider vinegar. There are a few varieties, but the best one when it comes to health benefits and effectiveness is the raw unfiltered kind, now available from Heinz.
From recipes, to hair care, to cleaning and healing, apple cider vinegar boasts an impressive list of uses, especially for the green, health-conscious household.
Heinz Unfiltered Apple Cider Vinegar retains the “mother” of the vinegar – a compound created naturally during vinegar’s fermentation process. It is ideal for salads, marinades and recipes as well as a variety of other uses.
One of my most recent discoveries with ACV is the benefit of adding a few splashes to my pot of homemade bone broth. After we eat a roast chicken, I toss the bones in a big pot of water, add the vinegar and let it simmer away. The vinegar helps leach minerals from the bones and adds an extra deep flavor to the broth.
Apple cider vinegar makes a great alternative to chemical cleaners – it absorbs odors and has antibacterial qualities. Mix one part water with one part vinegar for a safe, non-toxic all-purpose cleaning spray.
Rinse your hair with a bit of ACV diluted in a quart of water to strengthen and give extra shine to your hair after shampooing. Or, better yet, skip the chemical shampoos and dive right into “No ‘Poo!” Apple cider vinegar is the best vinegar to use for this increasingly popular method of hair care that will leave your hair healthier and happier.
Seriously, it’s that good for you. Don’t drink it straight, it can burn your esophagus, but add a teaspoon or more to a glass of water at least once daily for a myriad of health benefits. It’s a great source of potassium, an effective but gentle de-toxifier, and one of the best cures for heartburn, gas and bloating. Raw, unfiltered ACV has the beneficial bacteria that your gut needs to stay healthy.
Get a Baby Boy
Okay, this one hasn’t actually been proven yet, but supposedly a more alkaline environment helps along those boy-sperm and guess what? Taking ACV helps your body be more alkaline. Maybe our girls will finally get a brother if I get more faithful about taking it.
What’s even better is that research is showing that cancer does not thrive in an alkaline environment. Sign me up for that!
This is just the tip of the iceberg, folks. Apple cider vinegar is useful for so many household applications, a delicious addition to your recipes, and it’s cheap. The unfiltered variety is the most expensive, and it’s only about $3.99 a quart!
