He was super cranky, clingy, and unhappy a lot of the time, but would calm down a bit if I put some teething gel on his gums (so I know he was teething).
I had read a few blog posts and talked to a few friends who had tried baltic amber and some recommended it highly while others weren’t sure if it helped or not. I decided it was worth a try.
I hated putting that junk in my son’s mouth especially because we were BFing, and well, it didn’t help things.
As soon as my husband saw it he asked me why our son was wearing a necklace (he’s has this thing against man-jewlery). I told him about the benefits of baltic amber and how it might help his teething pain and thus help him to be happier.
“You bought him a magic necklace?” he said incredulously.
I said “It’s worth trying. I mean, it might actually work.”
My husband let me try it- we were both worn out from the unhappy little guy. I’ve had the same conversation with different details with several friends and family members and endured being poked fun at a few times. The joke’s on them though, that necklace worked!
It was amazing. Angelo would be super fussy, and I’d put it on and he’d be pretty good the rest of the day. I forgot to put it on him a few days, and he got really fussy – I realized, and put it on him and wha-la, happier baby. Of course, he wasn’t happy ALL the time; it’s more he wasn’t screaming anymore ALL the time. So needless to say, I highly recommend baltic amber teething necklaces.
I recently had heard that raw baltic amber was stronger that the polished up amber because it contains higher amounts of succinic acid (the stuff that helps with the teething pain) so, I was delighted to try a Teething Tots raw balitc amber necklace.
If you’re new to baltic amber here’s an brief explanation of how it works and the benefits taken from the Teething Tots website:
“Amber is fossilized sap which contains trace amounts of succinic acid, a known anti-inflammatory and pain reliever. The warmth from the skin releases the active ingredient in the amber. The active ingredient is quickly absorbed into the blood stream, when worn against the skin, soothing a baby naturally while he or she struggles with the pain of cutting brand new teeth.”

I received the dark raw amber necklace and it looks and fits great! I’m sure we’ll be using it for years to come. I do like the more rugged look of the raw amber beads for a boy. As for whether it works a whole lot better than the polished beads, I can’t really say for sure. I can say that it at least works just as well as the shiny beads, and it makes sense to me that if it contains more succinic acid to begin with then it might be delivering more pain relief.
So, don’t be afraid to give amber a try, especially if you have a fussy little one like I did. Whether you choose raw beads or not, they can help quite a bit. I do recommend trying it when your baby is younger rather than around the 1 year old mark. I think they’re more likely to leave the necklace alone if they’ve been wearing it every day for a long time than if you try to introduce it when they’re old enough to pull on it.
