What is Small Business Saturday?

by Mama Chocolate on November 11, 2012

Most people are familiar with Black Friday and the insanity that comes over the masses, all scrambling to get the best possible deal they can. It can be thrilling and it can be ugly. Thankfully, I live in a small town where there aren’t enough people to have the stories of people literally being trampled as everyone rushes in for the amazing deals.

But what about the little guys? Huge retailers like Walmart get the most attention on Black Friday, but where are the people lining up at the doors of the family-run shop downtown?

What is Small Business Saturday?

American Express founded Small Business Saturday in 2010 to help small businesses get more exposure during one of the biggest shopping weekends of the year.

Last year over 100 million Americans shopped at independently-owned small businesses on the day! I am excited to be part of the campaign to spread the word about Small Business Saturday and help to encourage even more consumers this year to get out there and support small business.

Growing up in a family who was running a home-based business, (started when I was less than a year old,) I know first-hand how important it is to have the loyalty and support of customers. For nearly two decades, my family’s only income came from our publishing company – we literally depended on those loyal customers.

Besides our publishing company, we raised and sold meat animals, eggs, and flowers. For several summers, every single Saturday we would be at the local farmer’s market with my brother’s flower business. During the middle of the week, we delivered bouquets to residents at a nearby retirement center.

And the awesome guy I married? He manages his family’s real estate appraising company. Now I’m running my own little business with this blog and I get to work with small companies, work-at-home-moms and the awesome family-run operations that help make America what it is.

I know what it’s like to be small business. It’s hard work.

When you’re working hard to grow or even just keep your business afloat, it’s exciting to watch people make the choice to support you and your family with their purchases.

Spread the word now about Small Business Saturday! I hope to see many others out there on November 24th, joining me in supporting the businesses that are the livelihood of local families.

*I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for American Express. I received a promotional item as a thank-you for participating.

I try to do some shopping at local places during Christmas. Sometimes they have the best gifts!

I had no idea about your family connections to small businesses, that is so cool! I ALWAYS try first to find what I need at local businesses before going to big box stores and think Small Business Saturday is a wonderful idea to spread the word!

This year I won’t be going out on Black Friday, but will be hitting up some local shops on Small Business Saturday and I am really excited about it!

I’m so excited for Small Business Saturday, there are so many local stores that I love to frequent, and am looking forward to supporting them on the 24th. My parents own a small business too (embroidery), so I know how important it is to support all those “Ma & Pop” stores.

I shopped on Small Business Saturday last year and I loved it. Went into my little town and gave some good business to the small businesses owned by people who live here. It was awesome! Plan on doing it again since I don’t have to work! =)
