Is your home safe?
There are a number of things that we moms worry about, not least the safety of our children. As every mom knows children are incredibly curious, adventurous and above all oblivious to their own
safety. There are, as ever, hundreds of guides on the internet which offer advice to new moms about making your home child friendly, but I thought I would write my own brief guide.
First-time parents bringing their new baby home for the first time often find it difficult to see many of the dangers that could befall a young inquisitive child. A great tip, to see the world as a child would, is to crawl on your hands and knees around the house. Generally, if you can reach things your child will be able to too. This includes any medicines stored below waist level and any low-lying cupboards. You can easily buy child safety locks from most hardware stores, so it isn’t difficult to close off these hazards. But I would still recommend moving any cleaning products, pesticides and gardening chemicals to a high shelve or cupboard, just in case. You can never be too careful.
Stairs are also a risk to young children, but these can easily be blocked off by stair gates, which are available from most mother and baby stores. These handy gates are a great way to cut off not only stairs, but also rooms that children shouldn’t go into, including utility rooms and garages.
In the end, young children are incredibly curious, which is one of the things that makes them such a joy to be around, but it is also something that can get them in trouble. The more preparation you
put into making your home safe the better. If in doubt ask a mom, they will be able to help you child proof your home, they may also be able to give you a tip or two!
